Television financing can be funded in many different ways. The main three ways in which these are funded are:
v Public Service Broadcasters (PSB) such as the BBC, mainly get their funding from the license fee which is £145.50 a month. From that, they take around £7.95 from each household in the UK. The BBC also can get funding from other ways which are competitions, merchandise and even syndication where some programmes off the BBC will have been bought to show in other countries.
v Another of broadcaster which uses similar funding to PSB such as syndication, competitions and merchandise is Commercial such as ITV and 5. Commercial Broadcasting is different from PSB as it gets funding from advertising. PSB has no adverts to get funding from. Commercial Broadcasting funding is more versatile as by some programs they have dictate on how much they receive due top popularity.
v Some TV channels have both Commercial broadcasting and Public Service Broadcasting such as Channel 4. Channel 4 gets its funding from the licence fee, advertising, merchandise, competitions and syndication.
v Subscriber Broadcasting such as Sky and Virgin receive funding from subscriptions, syndication, competitions, merchandise and advertising. Subscriber Broadcasting has a set amount on how much they will make by people subscribing to the channels. If Sky or Virgin for example didn’t have certain things on the channel people have subscribed for them, Subscriber Broadcasting wouldn’t make much money.
